300 Tang Poems
Many articles introducing the 300 Tang
poems say that the Tang period (618-907) was the golden age of Chinese poetry
and the 300 Tang Poems contains some of the most representative and beautiful
examples. Knowledge of it is of the utmost value, not only to students of
Chinese literature, but to all who have a general interest in Chinese culture.
The 300 Hundred Tang Poems is an anthology of poems from the Chinese Tang
Dynasty (618 - 907) first compiled around 1763 by Sun Zhu (孫誅), the Qing scholar
also known as Hengtang Tuishi (衡塘退士 "Retired Master of Hengtang"). Various later
editions also exist. All editions contain over 300 poems: in this case, "300"
means not exactly three-hundred; but, rather, this refers to an estimative
quantification, meaning "approximately 300". The ten, twenty, or more extra
poems represent a sort of a good luck bonus, analogous to the "baker's dozen",
in the west. Dissatisfied with the anthology Poems by a Thousand Masters (Qianjiashi
千家詩) compiled by Liu
Kezhuang (刘克庄)in
the late Southern Song, Sun selected the poems based on their popularity and
educational value. The collection has been popular ever since and can be found
in many Chinese households. For centuries, elementary students memorized the
poems and used them to learn to read and write. It contains poems by Du Fu, Li
Bai, Wang Wei, Li Shangyin, Meng Haoran, Han Yu, Du Mu, Bai Juyi, Liu Changqing,
Cen Shen, Wang Changling, Wei Yingwu, and more. Of the Tang poets which are most
notable in modern times, 300 Tang Poems, conspicuously contains no poems by Li
He.
The English translation in this collection of 300 Tang poems is mainly from
internet. For most of the English versions, I forgot who actually translated
them, sorry for the translator(s). I myself translated some,
李白夜思 for example, if you like the
Sheng Sheng
Man of Li Qingzhao (李清照) which I
translated in the early spring of 2010, you will like my translation.
The translation of Chinese poems is difficult because of the rhythm. If your translation does not contain any rhythm, you have translated a poem into a prose.
